Situation

The Climate Game was created to address climate adaptation challenges in Kenya’s Kajiado County, a region where climate change intensifies water scarcity and resource conflicts for pastoral communities. Women, youth and low-literacy groups are often excluded from climate decision-making, despite being heavily affected.

Assignment

The task was to develop a tool that could surface community knowledge and strengthen inclusive climate conversations. Using a Human-Centered Design process, the team gathered insights from local communities and CSOs, mapping how climate change shapes daily life and identifying locally grounded adaptation strategies. Early prototypes were tested with rural Maasai groups, using localized icons, images and language to ensure relevance and accessibility.

Approach

The goal was to design an offline, cooperative game that enables communities to explore climate disruptions and adaptation choices together, with special attention to engaging traditionally marginalized groups such as women and youth.

Result

The Climate Game successfully stimulated inclusive discussions, strengthened shared decision-making and empowered participants to identify climate actions. CSOs expressed strong interest in integrating the game into community engagement and advocacy work.
