01 Situation
Afghanistan ranks among the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations, yet lacks the institutional and financial capacity to adequately reduce disaster risk. In agro-pastoral communities, this gap is even more pronounced—DRR efforts are either absent or poorly executed, often undermining local resilience. Despite global funding streams, resources rarely reach those most affected, especially in fragile, conflict-prone regions.
02 Assignment
IRC commissioned the development of 3–5 paper-based prototypes that integrate Indigenous knowledge with modern technologies to support DRR. These tools were to be context-specific, aligned with IRC’s design principles, and used to test usability and desirability within agro-pastoral communities in future project phases.
03 Approach
The process began with rigorous desk research, stakeholder consultations, and a root cause analysis to surface key challenges and opportunities. A service map was crafted to position the brainstormed ideas within a standard DRR protocol. This strategic mapping informed the design of five targeted prototypes, each anchored in a specific DRR phase.
04 Result
The resulting framework equips IRC with a robust toolset to assess technical fit, cost viability, and community relevance—paving the way for effective field testing.
