Small Merchants Research Co-Design

01  Situation

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) required a strategy to address the challenges small merchants faced in accessing financial capital in Somalia and Uganda. The project’s central question was: How do we design an intervention to help vendors access cash grants and loans to improve the Dangorayo market? This work involved building the HCD capacity of local IRC teams while executing a rigorous, community-led design process. The goal was to research the market, co-design financial access solutions, and create robust, scalable implementation strategies.

02  Assignment

Define an intervention that helps market vendors, with a focus on women, get access to cash grants and loans, thereby positively impacting the function of the Dangorayo market in a crisis-affected region.

03  Approach

Survey questionnaires with vendors in the community(Dangorayo), Qualitative Interviews (depth interviews with market vendors), Co-creation workshops with prioritised vendors with high Impact.

04  Result

Synthesised how the Dangorayo market system and its ecosystem function, and how they connect to community needs. Defined the parameters and criteria for the intervention’s pilot phase. Designed the pilot’s implementation plan: timeline, activities, success criteria, and organisation.
