Co-Innovation Platform for Social Protection

01 Situation

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) identified a significant gap in knowledge-sharing and innovation across countries in the Global South. Although various nations work toward similar goals—improving nutrition via social protection—efforts often remain fragmented. Recognizing the value of collaboration, GAIN sought a digital solution to bridge these divides and accelerate partnerships.

02 Assignment

GAIN engaged Proportion Global to research and design a human-centred, digital co-innovation platform. The mandate included appraising current models of collaboration, identifying user-centric interface features, and piloting a platform prototype geared toward innovation in nutrition-sensitive social protection.

03 Approach

Proportion’s multinational team conducted extensive field research in seven countries, employed design sprints, and co-created four interlinked prototypes. The prototypes were validated with the various stakeholders in seven countries. Through workshops with GAIN and the steering committee, we co-created and validated various co-ownership models of the co-innovation platform.

04 Result

The co-design process led to four high-fidelity prototypes: Digital Platform featuring storytelling, innovation challenges, project tools, and learning resources. Design Sprint Toolkit that enables multi-stakeholder collaboration in programme design. Youth Mobile Reporters, empowering young people to document community experiences via smartphone. Conversational Chatbot enhancing qualitative data collection We recommended a multi-stakeholder ownership model along with a sustainability roadmap favouring a SaaS infrastructure.
