Design a Climate Game to engage women and youth in pastoral communities on climate adaptation

01  Situation

The Climate Game was created to address climate adaptation challenges in Kenya’s Kajiado County, a region where climate change intensifies water scarcity and resource conflicts for pastoral communities. Women, youth and low-literacy groups are often excluded from climate decision-making, despite being heavily affected.

02  Assignment

The task was to develop a tool that could surface community knowledge and strengthen inclusive climate conversations. The project required mapping how climate change shapes daily life and identifying locally grounded adaptation strategies.

03  Approach

We conducted intensive local research to build a deep understanding of the community, using immersive methods such as context mapping, journey mapping, location and service mapping, card sorting, and persona development. These activities generated practical insights into people’s realities, needs, and barriers, which directly informed the design process and created a strong foundation for co-creation. Early prototypes were tested with rural Maasai groups, using localized icons, images and language to ensure relevance and accessibility.

04  Result

The Climate Game successfully stimulated inclusive discussions, strengthened shared decision-making and empowered participants to identify climate actions. CSOs expressed strong interest in integrating the game into community engagement and advocacy work.
