Design data and technologies platform for nature conservation at scale.

Design data and technologies platform for nature conservation at scale.

01  Situation

The degradation of Kenya’s water towers presents a critical design challenge. These ecosystems are essential for biodiversity, water security, and local livelihoods but face threats from environmental degradation. This situation demands an innovative restoration strategy that can ensure sustainability, resilience against climate change, and contribute to economic development.

02  Assignment

The task involves designing scalable and modular restoration interventions that can be adapted to various ecological and community needs. This includes the creation of sustainable job opportunities, enhancement of agricultural practices, and engagement in carbon credit markets. The design challenge requires a framework that supports effective resource allocation, innovative financing, and integrates advanced monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) technologies for transparency and accountability.

03  Approach

The project adopts a collaborative design and technological approach, drawing on a partnership between the Kenyan government and IBM Research. By leveraging the watsonx.ai geospatial model, it aims to precisely map degraded landscapes and monitor restoration efforts. This challenge necessitates a systemic design solution that integrates Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) with cutting-edge technology.

04  Result

Expected outcomes of this design challenge include the revitalization of critical ecosystems, leading to improved biodiversity and water security. Economically, the project should generate sustainable jobs and promote agricultural enhancements, contributing to national economic development. Additionally, the initiative aims to enhance community resilience and livelihoods through active participation in conservation efforts. The overarching goal is to set a global precedent for collaborative, community-focused, and technology-driven conservation efforts.
