Strengthening Primary Eye Care in Rwanda with AI-Powered Clinical Support
01 Situation
In Rwanda, where only 16 ophthalmologists serve over 12 million people, frontline eye care is under immense pressure. Dem Dx, a digital healthcare company, received GCRF funding to assess the feasibility of deploying its AI-powered clinical reasoning app to enhance triage and diagnosis in primary eye care. The app aims to empower nurses and optometrists to take greater clinical responsibility in a system where staff shortages hinder timely and effective treatment.
02 Assignment
Proportion was engaged to determine the contextual fit and business viability of the Dem Dx platform in Rwanda’s health system, ensuring relevance across urban and rural settings.
03 Approach
Through system mapping, field research in Kigali and rural areas, and co-design sessions with stakeholders—patients, practitioners, government bodies—Proportion developed human-centered insights. Visual synthesis and collaborative workshops shaped tool design, business planning, and implementation strategies.
04 Result
The study confirmed strong potential for Dem Dx to enhance training, adherence to clinical guidelines, and service quality. Key design recommendations included offline access, multi-language support, improved usability, and continuous learning features.
