Situation

The USAID Nawiri program sought to address persistent acute malnutrition in the arid regions of Kenya, where children under five continued to face high nutrition vulnerability despite years of investment. Structural barriers, fragile livelihoods, and limited access to tailored services underscored the need for more context-responsive solutions.

Assignment

The task was to uncover why existing interventions were falling short and to co-design community-driven approaches that could strengthen nutrition outcomes. This required generating evidence, convening diverse stakeholders, and validating practical pathways for improved child nutrition.

Approach

The team conducted an in-depth literature review to map gaps and opportunities, followed by co-creation workshops with community members, government actors and implementing partners. A targeted design assessment was then deployed to test early concepts, explore behavioural dynamics and refine interventions through iterative feedback.

Result

The process generated actionable insights and validated recommendations, alongside prototypes ready for implementation. By transferring these prototypes to local actors, the program strengthened ownership and positioned communities to drive sustainable, nutrition-focused change.
