Empowering Refugee Communities through Human-Centered Design: The Dzaleka Refugee Camp Basketball Court Initiative

Volunteers—most notably Amadou Alpha Ba—confidently applied HCD/ABCD to deliver meaningful, locally grounded projects. The Dzaleka basketball court now fosters dignity, inclusion and youth well-being, supported by partnerships with the National Basketball Association and Jesuit Refugee Service, illustrating sustainable community impact.

Improving Immunization Uptake Among Zero-Dose Children in Somalia

Outputs included an insights report and a 2023–2026 Community Engagement Strategy featuring four interventions: gamified education tools, story-based communication, standardized M&E and strengthened partnerships with community and religious leaders. These approaches are expected to shift norms, increase vaccination uptake among zero-dose children and embed positive health behaviours within Somalia’s oral culture.

The study identified sector-specific opportunities across trade, services, and manufacturing, with emerging potential in IT freelancing. Recommendations span short-, medium-, and long-term interventions, emphasising integrated, multi-actor strategies to address interconnected barriers and enable scalable, resilient growth for women-led CMSEs nationwide.

Investigating the Bengalis of Pakistan

A photo series and journalistic piece illuminated the intergenerational impacts of statelessness: persistent poverty, exclusion from schools and formal work, and promising students forced into domestic labour. The work highlighted a community deeply rooted in the city yet continually denied recognition and rights.

Orangi Pilot Project

The completed maps were integrated into Orangi Town’s official archive, becoming critical proof of residence for thousands of households. This community-owned documentation has strengthened land claims, reduced displacement risk, and reinforced residents’ long-standing presence in the city they helped shape.
